Wolverhampton Art Gallery will open its doors to the 'Viking Heroes' exhibition when it arrives in the area next month.

Legends of nine Vikings will fill the walls of the Lichfield Street gallery to help visitors explore the past.

Carol Thompson, curator for Wolverhampton Art Gallery, said: “Wolverhampton has an amazing history to delve into, which involves a famous battle between the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons

“Through the research and creativity of everyone working on this project, visitors can get a glimpse of how Wolverhampton was at the time of the Vikings, as well as enjoying the stunning family-friendly exhibition from JORVIK.”

The touring exhibition, which will run until July 8, comes from The JORVIK Group of Attractions - which operates York's JORVIK Viking Centre.

Visitors will have the chance to discover more about Vikings including Eric Bloodaxe, adventurer Harald Hardrada, warrior Lathgertha, explorer Leif the Lucky.

Warrior Sweyn Forkbeard and the leader King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark will also feature in the exhibition coming to the city on May 12.

Director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust Sarah Maltby said: "The Heroes exhibition brings these Viking champions’ stories to life, drawing on historical and archaeological evidence to help explore the idea of heroism in the Viking age as well as looking at how these people were celebrated and commemorated in their time and ours.”

Displays, replica objects and a real Viking age human skeleton will help bring the exhibition to life.

Alongside the tour, a digital emporium has been created to show residents how Wolverhampton once was.

Curators and staff from Wolverhampton council researched the Anglo Saxons of the city for the project, focussing on the Battle of Wodensfield in 910
