Providence Place West Bromwich could become the first free school in the UK sponsored by an orchestra.

Sandwell Council last night approved a motion to make the Providence Place building available for sale to the Department of Education.

Under plans, the five-storey property will be operated and sponsored by the world famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

It will be the first deal of its kind in the country.

The project is a joint enterprise with Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust.

Sandwell Council's interim leader Maria Crompton said: "It is wonderful news for Sandwell.

"We have got to provide extra school places for children and this is the perfect way to do that."
