The Wolverhampton-born singer had travelled to Edinburgh to perform at Sir Tom Hunter’s charitable foundation dinner when she came face to face with Michelle Obama.

“Meeting Michelle Obama was without a doubt one of the greatest moments of my life,” said Beverley.

“I was truly in the presence of greatness. The weight of her legacy, especially as a black woman from an ordinary background, almost overwhelmed me; she is such an inspiration to me. It was such an honour to sing that night.”

The soul singer also shared her excitement on social media site Twitter.

“I just met Michelle Obama!” she wrote. “Still cannot believe I met the Great Lady. Joy!”

She shared a photo of the pair, showing Mrs Obama with her arm around the former Highfields School student.

“What an extraordinary night,” she added: “Thank you Sir Tom and all your guests for making many thousands of young lives better, and making this lady’s dream a reality.”

The former First Lady participated in a moderated conversation at a dinner at Edinburgh International Conference Centre with philanthropy and business leaders, where she spoke about her time at the White House.

The Hunter Foundation is owned by entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter, and has invested more than £55m in common good causes since it was set up in 1998.
