Sensational shows to come for Birmingham Hippodrome 2019 - including Les Misérables

A sensational spring season awaits theatre lovers at the Birmingham Hippodrome - the only catch is they have to wait until early next year to enjoy their favourite shows.

The city's theatre has released full details of which performances are set to be released in spring 2019, with the exciting first tour of Kinky Boots, Gary Barlow and Tim Firth's award-winning Calendar Girls, and Matthew Bourne's staging of the classic Swan Lake only a small slice of the line up.

But the most hotly anticipated performance can only be the return of Cameron Mackintosh's 'breathtaking' Les Misérables - which is set to stun West Midlands theatre-goers in June 2019.

It's been nearly a decade since the last sell-out UK tour of the Broadway production. The famous musical features songs I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, One Day More, Master Of The House and many more and has been seen by more than 120 million people worldwide.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Thursday, June 21 at 11am, and Hippodrome bosses urge fans to be quick and snap them up at their earliest opportunity.

But even if tickets do sell out, there are plenty of other shows for theatre fans, including award-winning stage play The Full Monty and Taj Express featuring songs from hit film Slumdog Millionaire.

Fiona Allan, artistic director and chief executive of Birmingham Hippodrome said the new announcements followed an already incredible year for the theatre.

She said: "Either side of our summer blockbuster Matilda are some musicals never before seen at the Hippodrome.

"The première season of An Officer and a Gentlemen will take you back to the 80s, whilst the award-winning Titanic The Musical, on its first regional voyage in the UK, tells the famous story from the perspective of real travellers. Taj Express is Bollywood at its best - crazy, colourful and high energy, featuring songs of Slumdog Millionaire’s A. R. Rahman. I didn’t realise I knew so many until I saw this show in London last year.

“Meanwhile, our Patrick Studio programme continues to expand, and offers everyone a chance to try something different. Our increased investment in smaller scale dance and movement, theatre, family-friendly shows and more means the Patrick Studio is rapidly becoming the space to experience edgy and alternative live performance.

“And of course, all of the support we receive – from ticket sales, donations and memberships to room hire and ice-cream sales – helps to fund the work of Hippodrome Projects. This includes all of our own curated and commissioned programme of indoor and outdoor performance, community work and transformational learning projects, helping to ensure that we can continue to bring even more unforgettable live experiences to audiences across the West Midlands and beyond.”

While tickets for Les Misérables go on sale next month, tickets for all other spring 2019 shows can be purchased from now.
