Stourbridge actress Esther shines on both stage and screen

An actress, who hails from the Black Country, is proving to be in popular demand on both stage and screen.

Versatile Esther Stanford will be seen starring as Camilla Johnson the girlfriend of security guard Barry Biglow day-time drama series Doctors on Friday.

And at the same time she will be performing with Black Country comedy group The Fizzogs in their latest show – The Wicked Wizard of Fizzog at the Netherton Arts Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (December 15,16 and 17).

Esther, who is from Stourbridge, is no stranger to performing in a full range of characters, having developed an impressive portfolio over 20 years as an actress.

"I'm very lucky that as an actress I get to perform a variety of roles from serious drama to comedy to Fizzog madness," she said.

"In Doctors I play Camilla Johnson, Barry Biglow's annoying girlfriend. I think you hear me before you see me, bossing him round via an answerphone," said Esther of her role in the BBC show.

She is also looking forward to joining The Fizzogs on stage.

“This is my third Christmas tour with The Fizzogs playing the comedy character Eunice Clagg.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with the Fizzog girls. They are all genuinely lovely and very talented funny women.”

Esther trained at ITV Workshop where her fellow-students,included Oscar-nominated The Theory Of Everything star Felicity Jones and Alison Hammond.

Her other television appearances include previous episodes of Doctors, as well as Eastenders, Heartbeat, Peak Practice and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates among others.

She founded and has run the Stourbridge-based Dramaworkshop for the last seven years and has helped nurture the careers of many budding starlets.

Two of the current Fizzog cast - Rebecca Fuller and Gregory Pipe – trained with her at the workshop whose students have also appeared in leading roles in Line of Duty, Doctors and Raised by Wolves.

After its opening three nights at Netherton, the new Fizzogs’ show will resume in the New Year at the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham, Oakengates Theatre, Telford, Theatre On The Steps, Bridgnorth, Artrix Theatre, Bromsgrove, Forest Arts Centre, Walsall and Rose Theatre, Kidderminster.
