Wednesfield Canal Festival attracted more than 2,000 visitors at the weekend.

The event at the Bentley Bridge Moorings next to The Nickelodeon Pub proved a resounding success, according to ward councillor Phil Bateman.

He told the Express & Star: "The weekend has been heaving with people – including families and friends.

"Overall the Wednesfield Canal Festival has been an outstanding success, with no incidents and no trouble, but more importantly lots of smiles and laughter.

"We've done exceptionally well."

The event included saw an assortment of canal boats moored for the weekend, while there was also a pop-up market with boaters selling handmade and homemade goods.

On both Saturday and Sunday, there was live music between 1pm and 5pm.

Councillor Bateman said the event had been bigger and better than last year.

But organisers are already plotting how to improve it further for 2018.

He said: "We had well over 2,000 people over the weekend which was brilliant.

"It's been a huge success overall and a lot of people have been asking about what we're going to do next year – they want to be part of it.

"This year has grown from last year, particularly with two days of music rather than one.

"Next year we'll be doing another two days of music.

"It's been brilliant and put the canal right at the heart of the community."
