The gloves will be the star of the show at the sale and are expected to fetch between £800 and £1,200.

They were signed by the boxing legend at a charity auction in Perry Barr in 1983.

Peter Plevey, aged 73, paid £500 for the gloves at the auction which were signed in front of him.

Peter, who lives in Kinver, said: “Muhammed Ali was very much an icon in every sense of the word and at the time he’d just started with his Parkinson’s.

“We followed him because he was such a huge character and I found him extremely interesting and humorous which he even carried into the ring too. His handwriting is a little shaky because his Parkinson’s had just come on. I’m down-sizing house now thought so I thought it was time to move on and go somewhere where they can be admired instead of being lost in the attic.”

The gloves will go under the hammer at Fieldings Auctioneers on Mill Race Lane in Stourbridge on Saturday in the Mantiques auction.

Mark Hannam, senior auctioneer valuer, said: “There’s interest overseas in the gloves – they may end up in America, Ireland or who knows where. This is one of the biggest signed items we’ve had in the sporting world.”
