But one Black Country football club has found its inspiration from an unlikely source – and some might say they've gone a bit offside.

Wednesfield FC asked for help to rename their Wenny stand via a Twitter appeal on Monday. Options were: The Robert Morris End, The Brian Savile Stand, New Sponsors Name, or The Liam & Cheryl Stand.

By yesterday 163 people had voted in the poll, with the most popular choice by far The Liam & Cheryl Stand.

The stand

Club officials have said they will now invite Bushbury-born Liam and Cheryl to unveil it.

Dean Gill, from the club, said: “We wanted to do something a little tongue in cheek to raise a smile and move away from the seriousness of the last 12 months.

“It’s been a serious year for the club – we have won two cups and now we’re due to find out from the FA in the next 48 hours as to whether we’ve been promoted.

“Robert Morris is an ex-manager and now runs the social club. Brian Savile ran the club 10 to 15 years ago.

“Liam and Cheryl have no connection to the club, but in order for the stand to be named after them, they must confirm they will attend to unveil it.”

Liam and Cheryl

Stands at the club’s ground, The Cottage, have recently been refurbished. But why the Liam & Cheryl Stand?

Mr Gill said: “It may have something to do with the 17 youth teams we have at the club, who may be more aware of One Direction as well as Liam and Cheryl than any other. It’s particularly significant for me as my son Leo, 12, was taught at nursery by Liam’s mother too.”

People on social media also made their own suggestions. Scott @fatscottie said: “How about The Lancaster Stand in honour of the airmen that died when the bomber crashed – I think it was circa WW2? Topical & befitting.”

But @Wednesfield FC replied: “Nice idea Scott – believe it’s the new name of the Albion pub.”

Cheryl paid tribute to former One Direction star Liam, who she met on the X Factor, on Father’s Day following the birth of their son, Bear.

On Instagram, she said: “Happy 1st Father’s Day Liam. You are the most amazing daddy and the best example for our son.”
