Wolverhampton students work with BBC to create music videos

Students from City of Wolverhampton College are producing music videos for the BBC after impressing bosses earlier this year.

The college has teamed up with the BBC to give Creative Arts students the opportunity to film promotional videos for BBC Introducing.

Earlier in the year, students created footage for Lichfield based band Venkman at Wolverhampton’s The Slade Rooms. Live sound and events students took charge of the lighting, staging and sound for the performance, media students filmed the promotional video while budding photographers took images.

After impressing BBC bosses, they were asked to make live music videos for KIOKO, including one for the title track of their current EP Let’s Be Frank, which has now been uploaded by the BBC to iPlayer.

Media lecturer Greg Spruce said: “This has been a great opportunity for the students to gain real work experience working with a prestigious client and a talented band. It’s really inspired them and forced them to work outside their comfort zones; they’ve produced something they should be very proud of.”

Music technology lecturer Jo Slater added: “KIOKO have performed with award winning rapper Tinie Tempah and ska legends The Specials, and last year were one of the headline acts on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury festival, and it was great for the students to work with such an up and coming band.

“The students made a fantastic video and KIOKO were so pleased with the results they have agreed to headline our Live, Loud and Local event at The Slade Rooms on Friday June 16.

Live, Loud and Local, featuring Kioko, Rubio and The Aznavours, takes place on June 16. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets, costing £5, will be available from www.theticketfactory.com or on the door.

BBC Introducing was created in 2007 to support unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians. The brand aims to give exposure to the freshest artists across the UK, with music played on local and national BBC Radio shows, broadcast throughout the UK every week.
