The Family Bhangra Night entertained families at Thimblemill Library in Smethwick.

Husband and wife dance instructors Sohan and Aruna Kailey lead the session which was attended by children and their parents who worked up a sweat to Indian dance routines.

The free event, held on Thursday (01) evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, was described as 'wonderful' by families who attended the event.

Bal Braich-Bains, aged 43 from Smethwick, who attended the event alongside her seven-year-old daughter Bonneeve, said: "It was wonderful. We danced with the main dancers and went round in a circle and kept up with their moves.

"Children had lots of fun. There was also free food and a raffle."

Mehndi hand painting was also on offer for guests, which proved a popular attraction. It was run by Neeta Lagah.

Music was provided through a music system brought along by Sohan alongside a member of the public who brought along his drum and played along.

Parents and children took to the dance floor as they followed the lead of Sohan and Aruna.

Library supervisor Julie Mckirdy said: "There was a queue and Neeta never looked up - all the children were queueing for the mehndi.

"We had a bhangra family workshop which was more like a cultural festival.

"It was such a wonderful night. We had lots of feedback from guests who were saying what a fabulous night it was."

Julie runs the library alongside volunteer assistant Liveleen Binning.

The idea for the event came from Julie who runs a music club once a month, where people can attend the library and relax and play their favourite vinyl records.

"Last year we put on another music event and bhangra evening," said Julie. "It was so successful we thought we would do another one ready for half term activities."
