The band formed in 1978 and they attracted significant controversy due to the political nature of their songs and provocative lyrics, leading to several stores refusing to stock their music.

In the mid 1980s, vocalist Jello Biafra became an active campaigner against the Parents Music Resource Center. This culminated in an obscenity trial between 1985 and 1986, which resulted in a hung jury.

The band broke up in 1986 and reformed in 2001 without Biafra following a legal case regarding songwriting credits and unpaid royalties, that Biafra lost.

Dead Kennedys released four studio albums and one EP, with hit singles including Holiday in Cambofia and California Uber Alles.
