The theatre's share of council funding has been drastically cut – it received £174,000 last year – but the authority said it contributed to the building's recent £1.1 million revamp.

Councillor John Reynolds, cabinet member for city economy, said: "Our grant to the Grand has reduced over the years in line with the grant we get from central government but last year improvements were made to the building and the manger has said that income is increasing."
