V spells Victory for Sandwell 1940s night

It may have been 2017 on the outside - but inside Wednesbury Town Hall the clock had been turned back 70 years.

Nostalgia was the name of the game at the sold-out 1940s event organised by two fans of the era.

Almost 200 people dressed up in period costume for a night of music, dancing and cocktails.

Dawn Craddock, whose aunt told her stories and played her music of the era, and her friend Clare Woodland were behind the event.

Mother-of-two Dawn said: "I lived with my aunt when I was younger and loved dressing up in all her 1940s clothes and listening to the songs of the time, and I grew to love them too."

The 47-year-old support practitioner at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital said people travelled from as far away as Southport and Wales to attend.

The town hall was suitably decorated with bunting and piles of sandbags.

An air raid shelter added a touch of authenticity to the proceedings and the windows of the Holyhead Road venue were even blacked out for the occasion.

Mrs Craddock said: "It was a fantastic night. Everyone made the effort to come in 1940s clothes and the dance floor was full."

Several guests queued up to have their photographs taken with Winston Churchill lookalike Martin Fowkes, while music was provided by ukulele player Lesley Fowkes and crooner Kevin Mack who sang songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Another 1940s event has been planned for August 19 and 20.
