Angela Potter, head of wildlife operations, said: "Christmas Day for the animal keepers is much like any other day, but starts very early. They have to make sure that all the animals in their care have their dinners and are warm and cosy before the keepers head home for their own celebrations.

"We feel that the animals are part of our families and therefore it's important that their needs are catered for first and that they join in with the festivities too."

After ensuring that the lorikeets have had their fill of nectar, the lemurs are cuddled up in their sleeping quarters and the hoof stock have enough hay for the night, the keepers will head off home to enjoy their well- earned Christmas dinners.
