The 80-year-old, known as the Songaminute man because of his memory for songs, became an online star after a video of him singing with his son Simon on YouTube went viral and he signed a record deal.

Ted grew up in Wednesbury – and his singing career began in the many local clubs and pubs.

And although he left the Black Country and moved up north in the 1960s, settling in Blackburn, he still has family here.

In the carpool karaoke video, which has since been viewed millions of times, Ted sings along to Quando, Quando, Quando.

His son uploads them onto YouTube with a link for people to donate to Alzheimer's Society.

Now Ted's fascinating journey has hit another extraordinary high as he has received a prestigious award.

He received the Special Recognition award at the Pride of Britain awards ceremony, aired on ITV.

The award, for achievements not covered in other categories, such as inspiring carers, campaigners and members of armed forces, was received by Mr McDermott's son, Simon as Ted could not attend.

The award was presented by Sir Cliff Richard and Dame Joan Collins who said to Simon: "You're father is amazing - I know all those songs myself."

Ted has so far raised nearly £130,000 for Alzheimer's Society on his Just Giving page alone and proceeds of his debut single You Make Me Feel So Young have also gone to charity.
