The Touring Consortium Theatre Company will be staging a new adaptation of Meera Syal's Anita and Me in February at the Lichfield Street venue.

The group is now looking to add to its professional acting company with five local actors who will play the ensemble roles at The Grand and auditions are being held at the theatre on November 19.

The chosen actors and actresses will have the opportunity to rehearse with the main company during January 2017 and be part of the full technical rehearsals at The Crescent Theatre in Birmingham before a week of performances at The Grand Theatre.

The production company are specifically looking for two white young women, two white young men and one young Asian woman.

The poignant coming-of-age tale follows Meena, the teenage daughter of the only Punjabi family in the mining village of Tollington.

When she becomes friends with Anita, she thinks she's found her soul mate but her world is turned upside down and she finds herself caught between her two cultures.

Adapted from the novel by the award-winning playwright, Tanika Gupta and with specially composed music by the Ringham brothers, Anita and Me paints a colourful portrait of village life in 1970's West Midlands during the era of flares, power cuts and glam rock.

The performance schedule includes two matinees and five evenings between the dates of Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 February.

Applicants must be 16 or over and would preferably have some performance experience.

All those wishing to be considered should email janice@touringconsortium.com to receive an application form - don't contact the Grand Theatre directly to register for an audition.
