Cannock Chase to host weekly volunteer-led parkruns
Cannock Chase will have its own volunteer-led parkrun from next month.
Parkrun organisers arrange free and weekly timed runs around the world – and others are held in Wolverhampton in West Park and at Walsall Arboretum.
Runners will be able to turn out weekly on Saturdays at 9am to take part in the 5k timed run at Marquis Drive Country Park.
Figures published this year showed that about seven in 10 adults are either overweight or obese in Cannock Chase and that less than half adults in the district meet recommended levels of physical activity.
Groups including Chase Harriers, Chasewater Runners, Rugeley Runners and Stafford Harriers have brought expertise together to set up the park run.
The first will be held on November 19.
Portfolio leader for health and wellbeing at Cannock Chase District Council, Councillor Muriel Davis, said: "I am delighted that the parkrun is coming to Cannock Chase; one of the Councils priorities is to increase access to physical activity for better health and wellbeing. This run will give residents the opportunity to take part in a free and safe place to run, with guidance from the local running clubs and lots of encouragement."
Runners must register before they take part at parkrun's website www.parkrun.org.uk/cannockchase and any willing volunteers are asked to contact Ellen Williams on 07912 755482 or email chasewaterrunningclub@gmail.com.
