Am dram with Alison Norton

While we adult performers patiently await the release of the rights to West End hits such as Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera, youth groups are happily presenting the junior versions of these shows, often with pleasant results.

Earlier this year I saw a production of Les Miserables performed by Bilston Operatic Company's young members which completely blew me away and I suspect West Bromwich Operatic Society's Youth Theatre, who will present Andrew Lloyd-Webber and TS Eliot's Cats from November 2-5 at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre, will do exactly the same.

Based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by TS Eliot, this musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles.

Songs from the show include The Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity the Mystery Cat, Shimbleshanks The Railway Cat, The Jellicle Ball and of course the stunning ballad, Memory which has been a hit for so many singers, including Elaine Paige, Barbara Streisand and most recently Nicole Scherzinger. With a 50-strong cast of all-singing, all-dancing young performers, it promises to be the cat's whiskers.

For tickets, call 01543 412121 or visit wbos.co.uk/youththeatre There are nightly performances at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday.

Pantomine is just "behind you" now, but rather than a traditional panto, Telford and District Light Operatic Players will present Cinderella the Musical, with music by Rodgers and book and lyrics by Hammerstein, from October 26-29 at The Place within Oakengates Theatre.

The score is magical and includes The Prince is Giving a Ball, Do I Love You Because You Are Beautiful?, When You're Driving Through the Moonlight and In My Own Little Corner.

The perfect alternative to traditional pantomime this autumn. For tickets call 01952 382382 or visit tadlop.com

Remember the theme tune They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky?

A modern show which seems to be very popular at present is the Broadway hit musical comedy The Addams Family, with characters created by Charles Addams for his cartoon series and is the perfect choice this Halloween.

The frightful world of this ghoulishly gruesome family, which includes Gomez, his wife Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch the butler, is brought to life by Brownhills Musical Theatre Company who will present the show at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock, from November 2-5.

The family is put to the test when Wednesday announces her intention to marry a nice, normal young man, her prospective in-laws join them for dinner and her ancestors can't get back to 'the other side' – all this hurling them into a night that will change their lives forever.

There are nightly performances at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee on November 5. Take the kids too because it is not scary at all.

For a more traditional offering, Cradley Heather Amateur Operatic Society – or CHAOS as they are affectionately known – present Rodgers and Hammerstein's heart-breaking musical, Carousel, at Brierley Hill Civic Hall from November 8-12.

The score of this musical contains some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best works including June is Bustin' Out All Over, If I Loved You, Blow High, Blow Low, When the Children Are Asleep and of course the unforgettable anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone, adopted by football fans the nation over.

Drama lovers can catch a production of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by Nick Lane, at Oldbury Rep from November 5-12.

Brilliant scientist Dr Henry Jekyll creates a formula which unleashes the beast inside, transforming him into the hideous, dangerous creature, Mr Hyde. Unable to control this affliction, it isn't long before he begins to kill.

Described as a haunting science fiction classic, it is just the thing for a dark autumnal evening.

For tickets, visit oldburyrep.org or call 0121 5522761.
