And he inadvertently sparked a healthy, if not slightly controversial debate about the city – with writer Caitlin Moran recommending he grab the Thunderbird 20/20 and make his own amusement.

Osman, who created and co-presents BBC One's quiz show Pointless, is coming to the city on October 30.

Tweeting the news yesterday he said: "I am going to Wolverhampton on the 30th. I have never been to Wolverhampton before. Is it all they say it is? @sarahbrookes1 @caitlinmoran?"

He quickly stirred up a storm on Twitter, with Wolverhampton-dwellers suggesting where Osman should visit.

In the spirit of the BBC One show Pointless, we have created our own series of questions for you to try and answer.

Pointless is a quiz in which contestants try to score as few points as possible by plumbing the depths of their knowledge to come up with obscure answers. You get three chances to get a Pointless answer.

Many notable locals contributed to the discussion including sports journalist and Match of the Day presenter, Jacqui Oatley who said: "@richardosman Have a knees-up in your local pub on the 29th, because you won't be home for a while once you've discovered Wolverhampton."

Well-known crime writer Mark Billingham said: "There's a great football team..." Richard Osman replied: "Cool! West Brom or Birmingham?" Billingham said: "*Not rising to bait* #waitijustdid."

Whilst @OfficialWolves tweeted: "It's everything you ever dreamed of and more."

Wolves said that the city is 'everything you dreamed of'

Wolverhampton-born Moran responded saying that all that can be done in Wolverhampton is travel on a bus route that hasn't existed for some time. She said: "If you get the 512 bus, you get a lovely view of the Wrekin. I'm genuinely trying to think of anything else. It's really a place to 'make your own amusement'. I recommend Thunderbird 20/20, sitting in a bus-stop, grunge."

TV presenter Suzi Perry, who grew up in the Finchfield area of the city replied to Moran to say: "Don't listen Richard, an afternoon in West Park and a curry @TheBilash will fix you."

A council spokesman said: "Wolverhampton Art Gallery would be a great place for Richard to enjoy or, if he prefers to be outdoors, West Park has plenty to offer. Afterwards, he could take Suzi's advice and head to Michelin-rated restaurant Bilash. We also recommend sampling the local brew from world-leading brewer Marston's." It is not yet known why Osman is visiting.
