Gold medallist Joe Clarke set to switch on Stafford Christmas lights

Staffordshire Olympic gold medallist Joe Clarke will switch on the Christmas lights in Stafford – on the day he receives the Freedom of the Borough.

Councillors unanimously voted for Joe to be given the honour at a meeting on Tuesday when council leader, Patrick Farrington, also revealed the Stafford and Stone Canoe Club paddler had agreed to turn on the lights on November 19.

Joe, aged 23, claimed Team GB's second gold of the Rio Olympics in the K1 slalom. He said it would be an 'honour' to receive the honour and switch on the lights.

Councillor Farrington, said: "He has been a great ambassador for the sport and Stafford and Stone Canoe Club."
