Thousands hit Cannock Chase to join Memory Walks
More than 3,500 people walked across Cannock Chase to raise money for a charity which helps people with Alzheimer's.
They had different reasons for taking part in one of the two arranged Memory Walks – either 10k or 3.5k long – to remember loved ones affected by dementia and also to celebrate people's lives which have been affected by the condition.
The walks have so far raised £110,000 and delighted organisers said that the diverse turnout included dogs and elderly people using walking aids.
The many walkers started and finished on the old RAF base on the beauty spot and were started by Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling.
Miss Milling said: "It's a real pleasure to start the walk and I'm thrilled to see how many people have supported this year's Memory Walk and it's for a great cause.
"My grandmother had dementia and struggled.
She continued: "I have seen people today who I have met at dementia support groups and you can see how many people dementia affects on a day like this.
"It's fantastic to see everyone at Cannock Chase."
Sarah Chapman, aged 41, from Cannock, attended the Memory Walk with her son Nathan, 12.
She said: "My dad had dementia and Parkinsons and died last year. I'm here to raise some money and do something nice."
Sharon Wright, Services Manager for Alzheimer's Society, said: "It has been amazing to see such a large amount of people turning up today to walk for a world without dementia.
"Dementia can be isolating but Memory Walk in Cannock Chase shows that you are not alone.
She added: "Alzheimer's Society is here for anyone affected by dementia and you call the national helpline on 0300 222 1122."
Alzheimer's is a disease that causes dementia.
It is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about two-thirds of cases in older people.
Each Memory Walk went through the forest and the country park.
There was a gentler, wheelchair accessible 3.5km walk, or a venture further into the Site of Special Scientific Interest taking in the peaceful 10km circular route which included woodlands, streams and had some fantastic views across the Chase.
