The pavilion, skate park, parkour area and multi-use games area were all officially opened by Cannock Chase District Council at a special ceremony yesterday.

The popular park underwent a huge improvement programme after £2.2 million was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund back in 2012.

Councillor Paul Woodhead attended the ceremony yesterday, along with representatives from the council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and various schools.

Councillor Woodhead said: "It is a really good thing for the community. There is things for every age group which is great.

"The park will be positive for us for years to come.

"I go past it regularly and it is always full down there.

"Things take a long time from start to finish. There has been some changes at the park and these take awhile. There has been some frustration from the community but I just hope they see now that the short term frustration was worth it."

Work on the park has included a revamp of the pavillion. The remodelled building now features an ice cream parlour, café and kiosk, community room and changing room facilities and opened last month.

Other work included the new skate park, featuring a street plaza bowl and a quarter pipe, and a new play area.

The play area opened back in December last year.

Work is not finished at the park yet however, with the historic signal box located within the grounds still yet to be converted.

The Hednesford signal box, which dates back to the 1880s, was shifted to Hednesford Park in 2013 after it was saved from demolition at the 11th hour.

It sat derelict for awhile but work is to begin shortly to convert the signal box into a children's learning centre.
