Gallery: Burntwood kart derby hits streets

Burntwood was turned into a race track as the town's annual Kart Derby hit the streets.

The Burntwood Kart Derby saw a section of the Cannock Road closed by the town's shopping centre for the hand built vehicles whizzed around the streets.

Hundreds of spectators lined the course to cheer on the teams as people-powered homemade karts were pushed or pulled as they raced each other to be crowned best in town.

It comes after the the first ever kart derby, which took place on the August Bank Holiday Saturday last year, went down a storm.

KP Events were the organisers behind the event.

Kevin Wilson of the company said he was expecting it to grow in popularity and stature this year.

He added: "The event is the brainchild of Burntwood Town Council and we were only too happy to take the idea and work with them to make it happen again."

Guest kart judges were local brothers Craig and Chris Danby who are robot designers who travel around the world demonstrating their creations.

The duo will also be appearing on the relaunched Robot Wars when it returns to BBC2 this summer.

Teams of all shapes and sizes were welcome to take part including junior, corporate and family teams.

Prizes ranged from best dressed push kart to fastest along with best technical design soap box.
