Albrighton Cricket Club is caught out by RAF Cosford Air Show

A cricket club has been forced to cancel its biggest fundraiser of the year because it was due to take place on the same day as the Cosford Air Show.

Albrighton Cricket Club sits below the main flying display area for the event and due to changes to air show recommendations, RAF Cosford has advised that the club shut down for the day.

The open day, which was due to take place on June 19, the same day as the air show, is the club's most profitable annual fundraiser, generating money which supports it throughout the year.

The changes in recommendations were made following the Shoreham Air Show disaster in August last year, when a Hawker Hunter crashed on the A27 leaving 11 people dead.

Darren Shimmons, chairman of Albrighton Cricket Club, said: "We've been advised to shut, but it's our biggest day of the year so it's a disappointment.

"We've been told not to open for safety reasons. We still have other fundraising events, including a charity bash in July."

Access to the club from Kennel Lane will be blocked on June 19.

In August 2015, the Shoreham Air Show crash became the biggest air show accident in the UK for more than 50 years, with 11 people killed. A Hawker Hunter T7 failed to complete a loop manoeuvre and crashed into vehicles on the A27 trunk road in West Sussex.

As a result, the minimum distance of separation between a civil display and a crowd has been increased.

Clive Elliott, RAF Cosford Air Show director, said: "The cricket club is directly under the main flying display area. Due to changes in flying display regulations made to ensure the safety of the public, the club has decided to remain closed."
