The garden at Cannock Chase Hospital's Fairoak Ward will be adorned with patriotic bunting and a special birthday buffet laid on for the event on June 9.

Patients in the ward, which specialises in the rehabilitation of stroke patients and the elderly, will be encouraged to share their memories of the queen as a way to aid their recovery.

Ward manager Sister Clare Banks said: "Many of our patients are long-term and the social interaction sparked through an event like this definitely helps with their rehabilitation.

"Given their age group there will be plenty of memories of the queen's reign and lots of good stories too."

Around 20 patients will attend the party, as well as nursing and therapy staff. Entertainment will be laid on by local singer Jamie Barlow who specialises in Rat Pack and other big band-style music.

The Queen turned 90 in April but her state birthday is being celebrated on Saturday, June 11. Street parties up and down the country are being planned.
