The trenches of the First World War are set to 'come to life' at an event held at the Staffordshire Regiment Museum.

The venue, based at DMS Whittington near Lichfield, will host a 'Discovery Day' on Monday, March 28, which will see members of the museum's education team conduct guides throughout the site's reconstructed tunnels from the Great War.

Along the way visitors will come across the Regimental Aid Post which treated injured soldiers, a 'dug out' fitted with bunk beds and tunnels which soldiers called 'The Moles' used to undermine enemy trenches.

Joss Musgrove, spokeswoman for Staffordshire Regiment Museum, said: "There will be a typewriter and film installation where images and sounds combine to evoke conditions on the Western Front, watch out for cries of 'Gas! Gas!' and keep your eyes peeled for snipers.

"Learn about how soldiers slept, ate and kept clean, and explore the new German trench section with its fortified Pill Box."

Those going along will be able to complete the experience by trying on soldier's uniform and even handling weapons.

Ms Musgrove added: "Included in the tour is a uniform 'trying on' and weapons handling session plus full access to the museum's extraordinary collections, including a bugle that sounded the advance at The Somme – particularly poignant in this, the centenary year of the battle."

Tours will run from 10am to 3pm.

Tickets range from £5 for children and £15 for families – two adults and two children. The Coltman Trench, was first opened at the museum in 2002 but was relaunched during 2014 after being redesigned and it has proved popular with visitors to the attraction.

The revamp was geared towards providing a more realistic and emotional experience of what life was like on the Western Front during the First World War.

At the time of reopening it was hailed as the most sophisticated trench reconstruction outside of London's Imperial War Museum.
