A town centre pub in Walsall will call last orders for the final time this weekend following nearly 20 years of trading.

The Imperial in Darwall Street, which was opened by the Wetherspoon chain in 1997, will serve customers one last time on Saturday evening and then cease trading immediately.

The nearby former county court, which was also bought by Wetherspoon and turned into St Matthew's Hall, will remain open. None of the 40 staff will lose their jobs with all being transferred to other Wetherspoon's pubs.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "We can confirm that The Imperial in Walsall is to close on Sunday with Saturday being its last day of trading.

"We understand the pub's loyal customers will be annoyed and disappointed with the news but Wetherspoon has taken a commercial decision to close the pub."
