Walsall cinema nears opening date

The opening of an eight-screen cinema complex in Walsall town centre is drawing ever closer as work nears completion.

The Light Cinema, set to become the centrepiece of the £12 million Waterfront development, will take pride of place alongside restaurant chains including a Hungry Horse, Bella Italia, Pizza Express and Chiquito.

Construction started last May at the site, with council bosses confirming an announcement on when the cinema will open is imminent. The facility should be a huge draw for punters, owing to the fact it will be the first in the country to boast the latest hi-tech Extreme screen.

Councillor Mike Bird, leader of Walsall Council, said he believes the Waterfront development can become a competitor to Wolverhampton's popular Bentley Bridge site.

He said: "I think the cinema itself is a key part of the regeneration in that part of the town. Credit must go to Adrian Andrew for enabling this to come forward.

"He was instrumental in bringing this facility to the town.

"I think on the whole, the development will be great for Walsall and it will definitely see a large increase in footfall in the town centre. I genuinely believe the Waterfront development will be a close competitor to Bentley Bridge."

The Light is expected to open in February or March, with Councillor Adrian Andrew, who is the deputy leader, saying: "Very soon, we'll be confirming the opening of the new Light Cinema and six restaurants in the Waterfront area."
