Birmingham's biggest nightclub will remain closed amid claims of violence despite bosses attempting to overturn the decision ahead of a crunch meeting.

Gatecrasher on Broad Street, which welcomes up to 2,400 revellers a night, has had its licence suspended after claims violence broke out over the weekend of October 31 and November 1.

Birmingham City Council's licensing committee has suspended its licence until a full hearing takes place on Monday. Action was taken after security staff allegedly used a fire extinguisher, plastic tub containing chemicals and a tray of glass bottles as 'weapons' against a group of men during an altercation.

Simon Raine appealed to the committee on Tuesday for the suspension to be lifted until the full hearing takes place.

But the committee decided to keep the suspension in place – despite club bosses proposing safety measures.

Gatecrasher was unavailable for comment.
