The life-sized replica of Captain Jack Sparrow, drawing gasps of admiration at this weekend's Cake International Show at the NEC, is her most ambitious creation to date.

A friend rang to urge her to enter the show as she was relaxing in front of the TV watching Johnny Depp in his most famous role. "It's a good job I wasn't watching Coronation Street or it might have been a great big Norris instead," jokes the 27-year-old who took up decorative cake baking only two years ago.

Lara made the cake over two months at the home she shares with her fiance and parents-in-law in Brownhills. It has taken up all of her spare time – and most of the space in the garage.

"I think they will be pleased to get rid of it. When my father-in-law first saw him, he leapt about 10ft in the air thinking we had burglars."

It was her parents-in-law's silver wedding anniversary that spurred Lara to have a go at cake making. "All I'd really made before was some bog-standard banana cake in home economics," she said.
