Wise-cracking TV funnyman Jimmy Carr will bring his latest show to Birmingham tonight.

Jimmy Carr: Gagging Order will play at Symphony Hall – before returning to the venue on August 24.

A spokesman for the star said: "Gagging Order promises to be an hilarious night out. The show will be packed with one-liners, stories and jokes, some clever, some rude and a few totally unacceptable. Everybody's welcome. Just leave your conscience, sense of common decency and moral compass at home and come on out for a laugh."

Totally topical – Carr and the rest of the 10 O'Clock Live TV?show team

Carr has sold more than a million DVDs and hosted countless TV shows but live comedy is what he does best.

Carr has been wowing fans in his latest TV programme, 10 O'Clock Live, with David Mitchell, Charlie Brooker and Lauren Laverne.

He said: "I like it when we're just sitting around talking and suddenly David Mitchell drops a 'logic bomb'. Obviously we'd love to get big political hitters on the show but we'd also welcome Lib Dems."

The programme has not been without its embarrassing moments. Jimmy added: "Mine was dangling from the lighting rig of the studio dressed as an SAS Soldier hopelessly spinning away from the autocue I was trying to read."

Carr becomes so immersed that he sometimes finds it difficult to switch off. "I'll tell you what's difficult: panel shows. If you do A League Of Their Own and a couple of 8 Out Of 10 Cats in a week, you find when you're at the cornershop buying a paper you zing the guy behind the counter — being almost quite rude. It's like joke Tourettes. It's difficult to turn it off, but making light of everything can also be a lovely thing."

Carr likes his gigs to be packed with jokes: "I like the idea of a comedy show being all killer, no filler.

"There's no chat, it's just bang, bang, bang: jokes. I present myself as well as I can. I was lucky enough to get a good education. I tried a proper job for a while but I didn't like it. Writing jokes is an interesting one.

"If you write jokes it's like a crossword puzzle. I write every day, just a little and often, then eventually, at the end of that, you have an hour long show.

"I do a 12-month tour, it has to be different to the DVD. It's a new show.

"The nicest thing is when you stick around after a gig and people often tell me jokes, and often it's my joke. It's often something from my own DVD."
