Fantastic light entertainer or guilty pleasure? Whichever you consider him to be, John Barrowman can certainly wow an audience and last night at the Birmingham Symphony Hall was no exception.

From the opening bars of Kool and the Gang's Celebration, the crowd were with him all the way, clapping, dancing and singing along, building a party atmosphere from the get go.

His ability to connect with his audience is extraordinary, as he entertains with laugh out loud tales of his family, friends and experiences. The feel good factor oozes from his every pour and the sparkles on his suit are only out-glistened by his personality.

With a mix of old and new tunes including And I Love You So for the romantics amongst us, a tribute to his fans entitled I Owe It All To You, Firework accompanied by the multi-talented J4 dancers and singers, 1960's classic, Downtown and a heart-warming duet with his support act pal Jodie Prenger, Mr Barrowman was in fine voice.

There were tears as he sang You Raise Me Up and laughter for his ridiculously camp Eurovision tribute, but the highlight of the evening had to be the encore which included a wonderful new arrangement of The Winner Takes It All and of course John's anthem I Am What I Am.

A well-deserved standing ovation followed for an exceptional star.
