Sir Bob Geldof will be making a rare appearance in concert when he takes to the stage in Staffordshire next year.

The Irish rocker and anti-poverty campaigner will play two nights at the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield on May 22 and 23, 2012.

The 59-year-old, who seldom records or tours these days, released his first album in a decade earlier this year.

He rose to prominence as the lead singer of the The Boomtown Rats in the late 1970s and early 1980s but became better known for his activism, particularly in fighting famine in Africa.

His commitment to the Live Aid campaign killed off the band and overshadowed his solo career.

In Lichfield he will be performing with his own band, playing hits from the Boomtown Rats days.
