Reader recommends - Pub Grub

Find out which West Midlands and Staffordshire pubs offer the best grub - as recommended by our followers on Twitter and Facebook.

Published

Every week, we'll be seeking your recommendations of the best places to eat, drink and enjoy yourselves across the West Midlands and Staffordshire.

We asked our Twitter and Facebook followers to name the best places for some good, old-fashioned pub grub in the region. Here are some of their choices:

The Fox & Anchor, Coven

With a rustic charm and canalside location, The Fox & Anchor offers a pleasant dining experience - even if the name is a little odd.

Dating back to the 1700's, it was formerly known as the Anchor Inn and had to be rebuilt in the 1960's after the original building was destroyed by fire.

And Michelle White told us on Twitter that "they do some lovely hearty meals and an excellent Sunday dinner."

St Matthew's Hall, Walsall

Another reader has found a new place in the Walsall area which has made a big impression on him.

The reader, known only as The Tallygraph, has paid a visit to the new JD Wetherspoon's pub at St Matthew's Hall in the heart of the town.

Not only was the reader impressed with the quality of the food and drink, but the historic atmosphere of the building was also singled out for praise.

The Greyhound, Lower Penn

The Greyhound in Lower Penn is famed for its fine real ales, plush interior and traditional Black Country dishes and aims to serve the best steaks in the area.

And their pub grub is a firm favourite of Simon Earp, who recommended it on his Twitter page.

The Masons, Great Wyrley

Michelle White also told us about Masons Bar and Restaurant in Stafford Road, Great Wyrley, just outside Walsall.

She says the Masons is the place to go for "the best steaks ever".

And the Insider certainly seemed to agree when the pub was reviewed back in March, having also sampled the fillet steak and agreeing that they are of the highest standard.

Toby Carvery, Burnt Tree junction

Regular readers will have read the recent review of the Toby Carvery at Walsall, but it is another restaurant from this chain that Andy Ingram recommends.

Andy says the Toby at Burnt Tree junction in Tipton – we can't call it Burnt Tree Island any more, following the recent road improvements – is well on top of the game when it comes to providing top-notch meats.
