Jimmy Carr's reputation goes before him – and that's part of the problem these days.

With his rotund mug constantly popping up on painfully-hip (or just plain painful) TV shows, a lot of his best material has been well aired over the past couple of years.

As the night wore on, it was surprising to note how many of the gags were familiar.

Add to that a strangely subdued Civic crowd and it all made for a stop-start show which raised plenty of laughs, but never quite hit the heights of consistent hilarity.

The closest JC came was when he made use of visual aids illustrating gags about religion, politics and sex. Few who saw it will ever think of Jedward in the same way again.

Stabs at audience participation didn't really take off and it wasn't until the encore that Carr really let loose by unleashing his darker side with some unprintable jokes which were way too dodgy for TV.

The crowd lapped it up and you got the impression that if he'd lowered the taste barrier a bit earlier things would have been much better.

Not a bad show, but not great. Time for some new material Jim, you're spreading yourself too thin.
