He's cute. He's funny. And former Busted boy Charlie Simpson is now all grown up. After abandoning the pop-punk of Busted, and the heavy rock of Fightstar, he has moved into a more mellow, mature acoustic sound.

"I still love rock music but I think this really goes back to the earlier roots of my musical upbringing," he says. "I've always loved singer/songwriters as well as listening to rock music so my solo stuff is that side of me coming out."

He hasn't abandoned Fightstar altogether, however, insisting that it's a case of when they do another album, not if.

He plays Birmingham's O2 Academy 3 tonight – a rather modest venue when you think just a few years ago, a group he fronted sold out Wembley Arena 11 times in the space of 12 months. But he says he wouldn't trade his new life in for Busted for anything.

Tonight's show is sold out.
