Canadian songsmith Ron Sexsmith delighted fans new and old with a two-hour set to mark the Longest Day as his tour hit the Black Country last night.
Sexsmith's latest album Long Player, Late Bloomer and a BBC3 documentary about its making has re-ignited the singer-songwriter's career.
Last night's set was a mixture of songs from the album and of favourites, many requested by fans.
The 47-year-old looks an unlikely star with his pudgy features, but last night in a purple smoking jacket the strength of his country-tinged music and his melodious voice showed just why he deserves to be as big a name as some of those who have recorded his songs.
Radio favourite Believe It, When I See It, Just My Heart Talking and Hard Bargain, chosen as the title for Emmylou Harris's latest album, were outstanding along with older material like Gold In The Hills, Snow Angel and Strawberry Blonde.
His band provided a subtle backing, although he played a short solo set in the middle including an unexpected Sam Cooke medley.
