Former Beautiful South star Paul Heaton entertained the audience packed into Wolverhampton's Slade Rooms when he played live last night.

Paul Heaton, Slade Rooms

Paul Heaton enjoyed the irony of the title of his new single The Old Radio.

"This is one song you will never hear on the radio" he told his audience packed into Wolverhampton's Slade Rooms.

The mainstream has apparently forgotten about Heaton since he rose to fame with the Housemartins and the Beautiful South.

But the wordsmith's lack of commercial success is a mystery as his solo work is as clever, cutting and catchy as ever.

Fresh from last year's pub tour by bike, Heaton treated his devotees to songs from his critically-acclaimed album Acid Country, together with other solo work including as Biscuit Boy.

There were also old favourites from the Housemartins, including a stunning acappella Caravan of Love.

The 48-year-old was clearly touched by the rousing reception and entertained with plenty of banter, including his account of lunch at the Hollybush on the Penn Road.

He also revealed a soft spot for Wolves, claiming his great-great grandfather once lived here.

The singer is alive and well and looked at home on stage - maybe it is time for him to Carry on Up the Charts once again.
