Lookout Joe are a new piano-led trio from Coventry, who describe themselves as "jumping straight out of university into the ears of anyone willing to listen!" Members Ed, Ben and Drew are all 23 and classically trained. Their music fuses piano-led pop and rock influenced by everyone from Coldplay and The Specials to David Bowie and The Beatles, as well as inspiration from Ed's travels to South America. Evesham band Highrise are a young and energetic five-piece who formed six months ago to create edgy, catchy songs "that stick in your head". Jamie Brewer sings lead vocals, with Chris King on lead guitar, Matty Jones on rhythm guitar, Damon Bayliss on bass and Adam Kelly on drums. The band will shortly be hitting the studio to record an 11-track album. Winners - 20th January Heat.

My Great Affliction describe themselves as a 'full throttle rock and roll band' from Wolverhampton and Walsall. They are: Dylan on vocals, Barney and Scooby on guitars, Dazilla on bass and Craig on drums. The band say they "don't write music according to trends or current fashions," rather they play the music they want to hear, inspired by Queen, Motley Crue, Guns 'n Roses and Metallica. Left to Bleed are a melodic death-metal band formed in March 2005 in Leamington Spa - they are Damien Fowler on vocals, Dom Quinlan and Tom Kinksman on guitars, Neil Williams on bass and Matt Thompsett on drums. The hard-rocking quintet won praise in Total Guitar Magazine and cite their main influences as Insomnium, In Flames and Carcass. Winners - 4th January Heat.

Three-piece alternative rock band Inertia started out last year in their home town of Telford. The band say they were "sick of hearing the same thing on the radio" and have since written songs which combine their eclectic range of influences, fusing funky bass lines with gritty vocals and explosive riffs. Winners - 19th January Heat.

Mezzotonic are a Wolverhampton-based funk/rock band consisting of singer Simon Lloyd, lead guitarist Adam Parkes, bassist Matt Poole and drummer Dan Hayward. The band have played all over the Black Country, Shropshire and Birmingham, and did a live set for BBC Radio Shropshire for the Friday Night Gerbil show. Check them out at www.mezzotonic.net.
