Buying cooked breakfasts or variations on the bacon and egg sandwich can be a dangerous game.

Most people will be familiar with the old-fashioned greasy spoons that immerse eggs in inches of fat when frying them.

Each sandwich contains roughly your recommended annual cholesterol allowance, suggesting it's probably a good idea this calorie-busting meal is just a weekly indulgence.

But it's the regular Friday morning treat, so there's nothing worse than losing the fried breakfast version of Russian roulette.

The common problem is the under-cooked piece of bacon, complete with a chewy string of fat that cannot be severed with tooth power alone.

So it came as a welcome relief when I hit upon Some Like it Hot after starting work at an office nearby.

I plumped for a bacon, egg and mushroom sandwich on crusty bread with tomato ketchup.

A warning. Don't order your sandwich from Some Like it Hot on crusty bread if you plan on eating any more meals later that day. I've bought entire loaves that are thinner.

The bread itself is always lovely and fresh, but the bacon is perhaps the biggest attraction.

Perfectly crisp, but not too dry and with plenty of flavour, just as it should be. And, in contrast with certain other cafes I have been to, the cooks do not skimp on portions, so you won't have to deal with a part of your sandwich consisting of just bread and ketchup.

The egg is also properly cooked, but with the yoke still nice and runny so it can mingle with the tasty mushrooms - and all at a reasonable price of £2.50.

If there is a meal that tastes nicer than this, then I have yet to try it.

Some Like it Hot offers a prompt delivery service for orders of £5 and more, to anywhere in the local area, with a menu that also takes in meals such as delicious giant Yorkshire puddings, filled with meat, vegetables and gravy.

But to gain a true appreciation of the cafe, it is really worth a visit in person.

Too often employees of such eateries prepare your food with an obvious disregard for the end product, but the workers at Some Like It Hot never seem to make a sandwich they would not happily munch on themselves.
