Refurbishment and new management has transformed The Sun into the perfect spot for a classy evening meal.

The 50-seater restaurant has a menu to suit all tastes with classics like hand battered fish with chunky chips and open wild and field mushroom tart with garlic and thyme. The venue has a clean contemporary look and is attracting a mixture of early evening drinkers and food fans.

The atmosphere is bright and airy and there are a number of different seating areas.

My friend and I ordered pan fried tiger prawns in garlic butter with crusty bread and mussels cooked in white wine, cream and garlic. Priced at £4.95 and £4.50 respectively I was expecting a quality beginning to the meal and was not disappointed. The servings are impressive and the mussels were beautifully cooked.

Meaty prawns were piled up on a salad with vinaigrettes. They were tender and perfectly flavoured with a not-too-overpowering taste of garlic.

For the main course we ordered Thai red chicken curry served with lime and coriander rice and roasted butternut squash filled with summer vegetables and melting creme fraiche.

The meals were beautifully presented in large white bowls with salads and dressings.

The curry sauce was a creamy, mouthwatering treat. It had just the right mixture of spices to be mild but still had a slight kick. The butternut squash was filled with a mass of vegetables and had been chargrilled to make a colourful presentation case.

It was a hearty and tasty meal. The melting creme fraiche wasn't really melting, but it didn't detract at all from the dish.

For dessert I decided to brave a curiously titled stout pudding. Not really knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised to be presented with a half pint Guinness pot full of a chocolatey treat.

It was a rich concoction of cherries, raisins and fruit cake mixture topped with fresh cream and perfectly resembling a glass of Guinness.

The waiting staff at The Sun are extremely accommodating and are happy to meet a customer's every need with a friendly attitude which entices you to stay long into the night and enjoy a few too many after dinner tipples.
