The Mitre, Tettenhall

Sometimes the service was fantastic, other times it felt as if the staff didn't care if I was there or not.

The food has ranged from delicious to bland. Sometimes it was packed to the rafters, other times dead.

But after learning it's recently been taken over I decided to give it another go, and if last night's experience is anything to go by, I think I've just found my new local.

The Mitre is perfectly placed on the serene Lower Green. Inside it oozes cool with modern floorboards and a mix of wooden and leather seating.

After a busy day in the office, it was the perfect place to chill out. The menu was extensive and varied.

The man at the bar told us they are about to get an entirely new menu starting from next week. So while you might not be able to order what I ate, I can tell you with conviction that what you do get is bound to be delicious.

I went for rump steak with pepper sauce. It came with a side salad that for once did not appear to have been plonked on my plate, but lovingly prepared and laced with a delicious dressing.

With the choice of French fries or chunky chips I went for the latter at the suggestion of the barman. He was right.

My friend chose haddock and chunky chips and said it was the nicest meal he'd had in a long time.

We also shared some haloumi cheese which was soft and chewy.

My friend had never tried it before and I think he is now hooked from the look on his face when he tried it.

We even shared sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and then wished we'd got our own as it was so nice.

The food at The Mitre was simply wonderful and very reasonable.

With four drinks, our bill came to £41. What made the experience even nicer was the attentive but discreet service and the relaxed atmosphere.

With a new menu and talk of a revamp about to happen in the next few weeks, The Mitre is the place to be this summer.
