The Boat, Penkridge
Finding a good, traditional local among today's offerings of the somewhat cloned chain pubs is a rarity compared to days gone by.
Finding a good, traditional local among today's offerings of the somewhat cloned chain pubs is a rarity compared to days gone by.
But The Boat in Penkridge is just that and its canalside location means it is lucky to have a picturesque beer garden - ideal for a drink or bite to eat on warm summer days.
The 18th Century inn, situated next to the village canal in Cannock Road, is popular not only with near neighbours but people travelling through the village on narrowboat holidays.
Its charm has clearly helped to keep it in business over the years and it offers a fairly extensive menu of traditional pub food from sandwiches, salads and jacket potatoes to meals including lasagne, curries and roast of the day.
Having driven past the pub on many occasions, I recently decided to go in for something to eat and was not disappointed.
The inside was fairly small but was cosy although it did seem quite smoky, but that is something which will not be an issue once the looming smoking ban is introduced.
The main menu included more than enough variety but there was extra choice on an additional sheet of specials left on the table.
Details of children's meals and that day's desserts were also left with the menus.
I ordered the cajun chicken, £6.95, and went for chips from the offerings which included jacket and mashed potato.
The chicken portion was large and deliciously spiced and there were more than enough chunky golden chips.
A generous portion of peas, a chunk of tomato and two crispy onion rings were the perfect accompaniment.
Feeling hungry, my dining partner plumped for the mixed grill, £9.95, and the plate was packed with a 4oz steak, chicken fillet, gammon, two sausages, two eggs, onion rings, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, chips and peas.
Our bill, including two soft drinks, came to £19.64 which seemed reasonable for the amount of food, quick service and the generous portions we were given.
The Boat is open 11am to 11pm Monday to Wednesday, 11am to midnight Thursday to Saturday and from noon to 11pm Sunday.
