Wok 'n' Roll, Kidderminster

The Wok 'n' Roll restaurant in Kidderminster is drumming up its own fan club with its take away meal deals for under a fiver.And there can't be many Chinese take aways in the Midlands where you can fill up for less than £5 and still have change for a dessert.

The restaurant in Prospect Hill provides a host of traditional Cantonese dishes with something to suit every pallet.

It is part of the well known Ruby Cantonese Restaurant Group which also has premises in Stourbridge, Worcester and Leamington Spa.

For just £3.50, customers place as much as they can into a cardboard box which they can take away to enjoy at home.

My work colleague and I sampled as much as we could for £3.50 each.

We split the boxes up into one between us for the starters and one each for the main courses.

We started with hot and sour soup and chicken and sweetcorn soup. You might ask how you put soup into a cardboard box but it is ladled into a sealed container and kept piping hot.

The soups were very tasty especially the hot and sour which combines a wonderful spicy flavour with a sour tinge.

We both tried the yuk sung and also managed to sample the crispy seaweed and barbecue ribs which are always a favourite. The seaweed was sweet, well-cooked and really complemented the ribs.

The final box contained the real jewels in the crown with a selection of the finest main courses on the list.

I chose the sumptuous szechuan mixed vegetables made up of mange tout, baby corn and mushrooms with a spicy sauce.

It really is one of the finest dishes on the list and highly recommended.

My colleague managed to squeeze a selection of treats into the box sampling the special rice and beef with green peppers which were very filling.

There was even a bit of room for her favourite Singapore vermicelli which was cooked to perfection and not too greasy. The take away is open at lunchtime between 12pm and 2.30pm and 5.30pm until 11.00pm during the week. At the weekends the take away service opens until 11.30pm.

A home delivery service can be arranged for orders over £7.
