The Varsity, Walsall

When it comes to pub meals in Walsall town centre these days there is a fairly decent selection of places to choose from.

With an evening meeting to attend, the thought of cooking when I got home just didn't appeal so I decided instead to pop into one of these venues one night last week.

Not known for being quick at making decisions I decided the best thing to do was simply to walk through the doors of the first pub I came across which happened to be The Varsity in Darwall Street.

Having eaten here in the past, although not for a few years, I was pleased to see the pub hadn't changed much and unlike a lot of other town centre venues was not belting out loud music, with a handful of customers scattered around the vast pub enjoying a drink after work.

Deciding where to eat was easy but then I was faced with having to choose from the large number of dishes on the menu which took me a good 10 minutes. After much deliberation I opted for the steak pie served with pies and chips for a very reasonable £3.95.

Other options include lasagne and fish and chips while for those just after a snack there are baguettes, jacket potatoes, wraps and burgers.

With less than an hour to go before my meeting, I was pleased to see my meal arrive within 10 minutes. It was served piping hot and went down a treat with the portion generous but not so big I couldn't manage it all.

I was seriously tempted by the dessert menu but unfortunately decided there wasn't really enough time but for those interested it includes blackberry and apple crumble, chocolate fudge cake and treacle sponge.

To sum up the staff are friendly, the food is good and service swift and I will certainly be paying another visit the next time I've got a meeting to attend and don't feel like cooking when I get home.

The Varsity is a large pub popular with students. During the weekend the queues can be big and the music gets quite loud.

Opening hours are 11am-11pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. 11am-1am on Thursday, 11am-midnight on Saturday and noon-10.30pm on Sunday.
