For top food and service with a smile, look no further than the Plough and Harrow pub in Aldridge. The pub, situated on the Chester Road, is clearly a winner with fans of fine dining, writes Andy Richardson. I visited the Plough and Harrow on a Tuesday evening and the pub was packed out. I visited the Plough and Harrow on a Tuesday evening and the pub was packed out. But despite the venue's popularity the food still arrived promptly.

The menu has a good selection of starters including salmon and broccoli fishcakes priced £5.50, spicy chargrilled chicken skewers costing £4.50 and mussels marinara at £5.25.

I opted for king prawns which were served on ciabatta bread with garlic and herb butter. It was really delicious and was well worth £5.25.

My dining partner, Helen, chose deep fried breaded flat mushrooms with a creamy garlic dip which she also enjoyed and at £3.95 was good value. For a main course, there is a wide selection of steaks, fish, pasta and salads on the menu.

A 12oz king sirloin steak served with onion rings, tomato, button mushrooms, peas and seasoned chips is priced £12.50. The pub also serves toad-in-the-hole with award-winning Cumberland sausages, cheddar mash, peas and onion gravy priced £7.25.

There is also chicken caesar salad priced £6.95 and beef and Bass pie costing £7.95.

There is also a wide selection of fish dishes including scampi, priced £7.25, and fillet of chargrilled salmon costing £8.50. I chose gammon steak which was served with two fried eggs, pineapple, peas and chips and priced £6.95. The gammon was well cooked, very tasty and it was an excellent portion.

Helen opted for chicken carbonara linguini which consisted of strips of chargrilled chicken, mushrooms and bacon in a creamy garlic and white wine sauce. She also commented how delicious the meal was.

Helen couldn't manage a sweet but I was drawn to the apple granny crumble served with custard. At £4 I thought it was a bit overpriced but it was a generous portion of piping hot apple crumble which tasted great and was an excellent end to the meal.

The Plough and Harrow Pub is a really enjoyable dining experience and I would definitely recommend a visit there.

The food is not cheap but I think it is good value for money. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating throughout the duration of the meal.
