95 High Green, Cannock
I had heard rave reviews about the newly opened 95 High Green restaurant and its traditional British menu so thought I would pop down and see what all the fuss was about. I donned my finery on a Friday night and headed down to the cosy eaterie which was flickering with candlelight and relaxing in its atmosphere.
As soon as my boyfriend and I stepped through the door we were greeted by friendly and smiling staff who were only too willing to show us to a seat.
It was clear to see that the restaurant had already made a name for itself in the town as, having only opened two months earlier, it was already brimming with diners.
The waitress offered us a choice of upstairs tables which were tucked into three cosy and welcoming rooms.
Candles were placed on each table to give the restaurant a romantic and intimate atmosphere which immediately puts guests at ease.
We were then handed menus while the waitress took our drinks order before returning swiftly with a delicious bottle of white wine.
As I perused the menu I was pleasantly surprised by the dishes that were available.
Cajun chicken, fish and chips and burgers were nowhere to be seen.
Instead the menu featured a delightful selection of meals which are all cooked from scratch by Chef Matt Moseley who runs the restaurant with his wife Jennie.
Eventually and after much deliberation I plumped for the chicken breast stuffed with chesnut mushrooms and wrapped in bacon before being served on a bed of creamy mashed potato, £8.95.
The meal was like heaven on a plate, so much so that I returned to the restaurant the following week and ordered exactly the same dish.
The chicken was white, tender and plentiful while the bacon gave it added flavour and the mushrooms gave it that extra something that really topped off the dish.
The food was surrounded by a lovely rich sauce and I ordered a portion of hand cut chunky chips which were a real bargain at £1.60.
My partner opted for the rump steak with Shropshire blue cheese with pan fried baby onions and red wine sauce, also priced £8.95.
He said the meat was wonderfully tender and its flavour was enhanced by the accompaniments.
The food came in good time but was not too quick so that you couldn't enjoy an intimate chat before tucking in and the staff did not give you the impression that you should get a move on and clear the table for the next person.
We left it a little while before ordering the cheese board rather than one of the many tempting desserts.
It comes with local cheeses, homemade chutney and a basket of biscuits or bread as well as a choice of a glass of port or dessert wine.
There are also salads and a wide range of appetizers on offer which all sounded very tempting.
95 High Green has definitely filled a niche market in Cannock with its plush yet trendy appearance, friendly staff and best of all a first class chef who knows how to cook real British food.
