The Firs in Codsall has been named Wolverhampton Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) Club of the Year.

It has been listed in Camra's Good Beer Guide for three years running due to its wide selection of real ales.

Vice chairman and cellarman Nigel Griffin, 52, said: "We have been so lucky to be included in Camra's Good Beer Guide so to even be nominated as Club of the Year was a real surprise.

"We are so pleased to receive the award, we did not expect it to happen."

In order to be considered for the award, clubs have to be listed in the guide. Camra members then nominate and vote.

Mr Griffin said: "We always have three real ales on hand pull and as soon as they sell out we put on a different one. There are so many fantastic breweries and microbreweries in this country – we never keep the same ale on.

"There is also a cask ale mild and a cask ale bitter so our members always have plenty of choice."

The Firs also holds its own Winter Ale Festival every November with a selection of 20 ales all on hand pull.

Manager Leanne Griffin, 48, added: "We had a really fantastic night, the place was packed out.

"All of our staff came along to so it was really super to have their support even when it was their night off."
