The arrival of Thomas Simmons has been met with joy by his family, who now boast almost 60 members.

At the top of the chain is great great grandmother Clara Manns, aged 85, from Wednesbury.

Thomas has become the fifth generation in the family.

Roy Manns, who is now a great grandfather at the age of 66, said having such a large family is special for his mother after her husband Ernest passed away eight years ago.

She said: "She loves it.

"As long as she's got plenty of visitors she's alright.

"It's nice to be part of a big family and having plenty of people we can call on."

Clara has become used to being surrounded by a large family.

She had seven children of her own, has 20 grandchildren, while a 34th great grandchild is on the way.

For Roy's wife Edwina, it is different.

She said: "It's great for me. I was an only child so it's coming from one to another.

"It's a lovely family, they have made me welcome.

"They are all friendly and get on with each other."

Roy's daughter Charmaine is a granny at 41 and her daughter Kathy is the new mum.

And it doesn't appear Clara will be getting any peace any time soon.

Edwina said: "It's getting bigger all the time for Clara.

"I remember her saying to me 'I wonder if I'll live to be a great-great grandchild'. I said I think you've got a chance."

Newborn Thomas came into the world weighing 7Ibs 4oz.

Edwina said: "It's my first great-grandchild. It's brilliant, I didn't think I was old enough.

"I'm most pleased for Roy's mum more than anything, it is an achievement having a great-great grandchild."

And from what she has seen of the newest member of the family, he has not being causing too much mischief.

"When I saw him he seemed content enough. He has been pretty well behaved."
