Wolves fans wed in Molineux love match
It was one big match for a Wolves-mad couple who got married at the place they found true love – the club's home ground, Molineux.
Les Roberts and his partner Julie Shinton officially tied the knot on Saturday one year after the pair got engaged during a Wolves home game against Peterborough United.
On a cloudy April's day last year, Mr Roberts, 43, lit up the stadium by asking Julie, 46, to marry him in front of more than 23,000 fans.
The special day saw Les and Julie get married at the club's ground with photos taken at the tunnel and in the home players' dressing room.
To go with the occasion the pair included the official Wolves motto 'This is our love and it knows no division' in their marriage vows.
Les said: "It was a brilliant day from start to finish. Not many people can say they have got married at a football stadium.
"But after thinking about it and especially after the death of Sir Jack Hayward, we felt it was the best place for us. If it wasn't for Sir Jack the day would have never come."
Julie's daughter Charmaine, from Ashmore Park, Wednesfield, introduced the couple after Les and her got chatting at games and used to meet her by the brick memorial on the concourse of the South Bank, where Les's late father 'Jazz' has a brick in his honour.
Les – a Wolves fan since leaving school in 1989 – has been a season ticket holder for more than 10 years and Julie, who has followed the club since 1979, for more than 15 years. The couple now have adjoining seats – EE 114 and 115 in the South Bank – since moving in together more than two years ago. They live in Telford.
Les' original proposal took place at half time in the 2-0 defeat of Peterborough, with Danny Batth and Dave Edwards getting the goals. He lured Julie onto the pitch by telling her she'd won a pizza after the winning ticket was left on her seat.
"I collected the pizza but the proposal didn't enter my head," Julie said. "Then I saw him grab the microphone and I couldn't believe it."
Julie said after the engagement: "I'm on top of the world – I'm the happiest woman alive!"
